One of the coolest things you can do in Victoria [in my mind] is to get out and mingle with some of the locals – there really are some interesting, cool, and weird people around here! A great way to do that is by listening to some of them tell their stories on stage at PechaKucha. If you aren’t familiar, PechaKucha [I won’t even begin to tell you how to say that] is an evening of talks where you hear from about 7 or 8 people, often on some them like music, art, travel etc… and each person has about 6 minutes and speaks while slides auto advance – it’s a challenge for the speaker and always full of awesomeness. the events typically take place about 3 times a year so you really need to keep an eye and ear open for when they take place – a tip, the next event is in June.
On Thursday March 8 another PK took place at the Victoria Event Centre [ PK is always at the VEC on Broad St.] and again, as usual, awesomeness was all over the place! Hats off to the MC although I didn’t catch his name – he was friggin hilarious!! Kudos to Phillips Beer (@phillipsbeer) for keeping us refreshed [I enjoyed 2 very large Blue Bucks as usual] and cheers to the crowd who seemed to have a blast and was friendly and very supportive. The speakers… well, they delivered and the stories were funny, entertaining, and inspiring. We heard from 2 young local traveling foragers who sailed around the local islands for a month; got schooled on local farming for school kids; heard from a budding artist who just came to YYJ from Montreal; and got stories from a journalist, media story teller, publisher, pro biker, comedian, and electronic musician – PK9 was awesome as usual!
